Richmond has started their 2008 season in style defeating a disappointing Carlton by 30 points, 17.7. (109) to 11.13 (79).
In front of 72,000 strong, the Tigers ran away with the game in the second half, enjoying a 6-goal final term.
Gritty half-back flanker Jake King was superb all night for the Tigers, showing excellent hardness and providing plenty of rebounding run.
Superstar key forward Matthew Richardson started his season in powerful style, kicking five goals in what was a match winning performance.
For the Blues, not even an impressive debut from skipper Chris Judd was enough. The ex-Eagle showed glimpses of his best providing a key link in many Blue goals.
Carlton had all the running in the early stages, looking the stronger of the two teams. The Blues kicked away to a four goal buffer midway through the second term and had all the momentum. However, the Tigers were always nipping at their heels and would not let the margin get out of reach.
The second half was all Richmond, with King and Richardson leading from the front. They slowly but surely clawed their way back into the game, as they headed into the last quarter with a two point lead.
Richmond then kicked the first four goals of the final term, putting the game to bed and securing four encouraging premiership points in first game of season 2008.
