HAWTHORN has clinched their first premiership in 19 years, surging past 2007 premier Geelong by 26 points.
The Cats threatened to break the game open with 34 scoring shots to the Hawks' 25.
A vital miss after the half-time siren from Cameron Mooney allowed Alistair Clarkson's side to go in to the main break in relieved spirits, three points in front.
Despite the Hawks losing doubtful starter Trent Croad to an ankle injury and Clinton Young (concussion), stout and sturdy defence from the challengers proved pivotal.
Led by Hawks quarter-back Luke Hodge, nuggety back-pocket Brent Guerra and key defender Stephen Gilham, Hawthorn's defense denied the Cats putting their first-half dominance on the scoreboard.
Cameos from Stuart Dew and Cyril Rioli were sensational. Dew, who was part of Port Adelaide's premiership side in 2004, turned it on, booting two powerhouse majors whilst involving himself in almost every goal the Hawks kicked in the third term.
Meanwhile Rioli, first-year player and runner-up in the NAB AFL Rising Star, proved his class, determination and natural talent throughout the afternoon -- becoming a significant part of the Hawks' 'premiership' quarter.
Heroical Hodge was awarded the Norm Smith medal for his courageous and close to match-winning game off half-back.
Gary Ablett was clearly the stand-out for Geelong. The balanced rover's evasiveness was at its astonishing best, with the Hawks hardly laying a tackle on the superstar as he racked up 34 possessions.
